Photo Feature: The Hump-backed Dolphins of Tin Can Bay

In Tin Can Bay, Queensland, Australia, there is a sociable hump-backed dolphin (Sousa chinensis) female. She shows up near a boat ramp and interacts with people (and dogs) in the water. She also brings along her calf, which also interacts with the bathers. She used to be fed near the boat dock, which is probably how the interaction got started. Nowadays, there is a group of people observing her and warning bathers not to feed her, so that she won't become dependent on people. These pictures were taken in November 1996.

See the hump-backed dolphin page for more information about this species.
