Photo Feature: A humpback whale in Skjálfandi, Iceland

The town of Húsavík, located on the Skjálfandi, in Northern Iceland is the center of whale watching activities in the area. In summer, the whale watch tours can make up to 4 trips per day. You are almost guaranteed to encounter minke whales in this area. On a trip we took on board the Knörrin of the whale watching company North Sailing in late July, 1998, we were lucky and encountered a humpback whale as well. The crew of the Knörrin extended the trip, so that we had a chance of seeing this whale close up.
