Marine mammal links

This page contains a number of links to marine mammal related pages and some general biology sites. It is by no means a comprehensive listing. Others have already tried to compile complete lists of links and there is no reason to duplicate that effort here. The list has been alphabetized. A number of non-marine mammal links are provided on the Other Links page

This list is intended to present a wide variety of information sources. On this list you'll find scientific information, educational material, information about organizations as well as personal web sites with marine mammal, wildlife and conservation related material. The list contains sites of both supporters and opponents of whaling, captive display, dolphin assisted therapy, dolphin swims and whale watching. Some sites present documented information, other present personal opinions, propaganda or rhetoric. I'll leave it up to you to decide which is which. You can apply Carl Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit to help you make the distinction. See chapter 12: "The Fine Art of Baloney Detection" in:

Carl Sagan 1996.
The daemon-haunted world. Science as a candle in the dark. Headline Book Publishing, London. 436 pp.

Recommended marine mammal links

This is a list of links to sites which can help you get started in your search for more information on marine mammals. Their inclusion here does not necessarily mean that I support the site or share its view. I have included these site because they highlight a certain aspect of marine mammals or focus on a unique group of marine mammals.
Carl Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit
A must-read for everyone involved in discussions about controversial issues, including whale and dolphin issues. This is an extraction from The Fine Art of Baloney Detection.
Animal People Monthly
Animal People reports on animal issues and tries to present a balanced view.
Aquatic Mammals Journal
Aquatic Mammals is a peer-reviewed journal sponsored by the European Association for Aquatic Mammals (EAAM), the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA), and the International Marine Animal Trainers’ Association (IMATA). It features scientific papers on all aspects of the biology of marine mammals, both captive and wild.
Dierentuin.Net
One of the very few animal information resources in Dutch. The site is set up and maintained by a group of volunteers. I did the original marine mammal section of the Animal Database. Now most links refer to Wikipedia.
Monachus Guardian
A site dedicated to a group of endangered seal species.
New England Aquarium
The Neaq site is a well-designed site and has a good list of links (Aquatic Resources)
Seal Conservation Society
This site has lots of information about all pinniped species, and is richly illustrated
Sirenian International
An excellent site with tons of information about an often overlooked group of marine mammals
The Society for Marine Mammalogy
The site of this scientific organization includes a good career guide for people interested in marine mammal biology. Of course there is also information about its publications (including the journal Marine Mammal Science), the Society itself and conference updates.
